Is Facebook The New East India Company?

by 9:50:00 PM 1 comments
The British established East India Company and came to India propagating that they would industrialise India. Instead, they ended up ruling us for 200 years. And now, Facebook is coming in with Free Basics propagating that it will digitize India. Facebook is launching a new product Free Basics (read free version of internet to masses) having limited partners/advertisers with the right to refuse new competitors to join the platform. Moreover, this will allow cellular network companies e.g. Airtel, Reliance etc. to charge differential browsing charges for different websites, curbing your freedom to surf and equality of content.

How does it affect you?

According to Free Basics, you will be allowed to use only Facebook and a few other partner websites for free. Small Startups which have the potential to build the next life changing products could die an early death because Facebook gets to choose the products/ideas which it wants to get promoted. Imagine you set up a business and want to promote it over the internet, which is controlled by Facebook, only to realise that it got blocked since there was already a competitor partnered with Facebook.

For example, if Free Basics were launched in 2010, then Whatsapp would never have been so popular as 'Facebook Messenger' would have been free, while you would have had to pay data charges to use Whatsapp, Hike or any other messaging app.

Net Neutrality is ‘Real’ Digital Equality

Net Neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet the same, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.
